📖 The Story
Once upon a time, in the 1930s, a bridge across the First Narrows wasn’t just a government project — it was a private dream. The wealthy Guinness family (yes, the beer dynasty) wanted easier access to their estates on the North Shore. So, they funded the bridge themselves.
On May 24, 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth cut the ribbon, and the Lions Gate Bridge opened to the world. Later, in 1955, the Province of BC bought it for $5.8 million — and it officially became the people’s bridge.
Over the years, it has carried millions of cars, witnessed countless sunsets, and quietly stood as Vancouver grew around it.
